This Academy is promoted with the main aim of motivating the students to prepare for the Civil Services Examinations. It came to my mind only after I got the copy of the book written by my younger brother Mr Vijay Kumar IRS and ex-IFoS, titled as Face The Challenge. Whatever he did in his school or college days or later on while preparing for the civil services examination, has all been in front of me.
But when I read “My Story” in his book that I could realise how blatantly honest he has been in the narrative. I know he was not a bright student initially and he needed to be pushed up by me and our sister, to do well. Once he tasted the success of being a topper he remained so till the high school. But in the college he slided back and could not become a doctor and felt as if the world was lost to him. I know after all the failures, once he took up the challenge of UPSC wholeheartedly with his own subjects, the success was all his.
However despite knowing everything about him, reading his book was an eye-opener for me. The way he has gone about telling the time management and preparation of short notes for the Prelim and Main exam, is something extremely useful for all the UPSC aspirants. I felt that we must promote his ideas and coach the candidates to take on Civil Service Exam and the Forest Service Exam the way he did. So March 2014 onwards we have been discussing what if a coaching academy is started to guide the candidates using his philosophy and techniques. Even I am no stranger to the civil services examinations and I have taken my chances in 1975, 1976 and 1977. But as written in the book, the Civil Services examination is not a part-time engagement, it is a full-time meditation which must be taken up religiously to get the desired results. After topping in BE Electronics and Telecommunication in 1974 from NIT Kurukshetra, I got lecturership in the same institution and later on joined Haryana State Electricity Board towards the end of 1975. Since I never got enough time to study while doing the job I could never make it at UPSC.
I retired in February 2011 as Director in HSEB and took up the consultancy in a company giving me more than double of my salary but it was not satisfying. No sooner I read this book Face The Challenge, I could realise that yes this coaching for the civil services was something which could be satisfying for me. After all teaching has been my first love as a lecture in my first stint of the career. So I left consultancy and started applying myself to the idea of coaching passionately. Therefore our Academy is not a business idea, it’s an idea born out of passion to motivate the students to take up the challenge of UPSC.
